Value of volunteer time increases

One hour of volunteer time in 2007 was worth $19.51, on average, up from $18.77 a year earlier, Independent Sector says.

The calculation is based on the average hourly wage for all workers in non-management, non-agricultural positions, as reported by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, plus 12 percent for fringe benefits.

The total value of the time donated in the U.S. in 2006 was more than $158 million, based on the 8.1 billion hours the Corporation for National and Community Service estimates Americans volunteered that year.

By state, the value of an hour of volunteer time in 2007 ranged from a low of $13.51 in Montana to a high of $30.10 in the District of Columbia.
