News about grants, gifts

The Bank of America Charitable Foundation announced a $20,000 contribution to "The Ripple Effect," Wake Tech's major gifts campaign. The financial support helps students who want to continue their education with additional coursework or pursue a certificate in a trade or life skills program.

A $50,000 Preserving Natural and Cultural Resources Focus Area Grant from The Community Foundation of Western North Carolina to the Friends of the WNC Nature Center will fund enhancements to the red wolf exhibit and build a covered pavilion, two priority projects in the 2020 Vision and Master Site Plan for the nature park that serves the region.

James E. Williams, Executive Director for Andy's Charitable Foundation Inc. has donated $10,000 to Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina.  The gift will help the organization grant wishes to children in eastern North Carolina with life-threatening medical conditions.

Lowes, a President's Circle Sponsor of Rebuilding Together, is addressing critical home needs during cold weather months.  During the course of the fall, Lowe's will support 65 Rebuilding Together affiliates, including Rebuilding Together of the Triangle, by helping them achieve their mission of giving low-income homeowners a safe and healthy home. This $520,000 grant is part of the overall $2 million Lowe's has donated to Rebuilding Together's mission for 2012.

The N.C. Museum of History Foundation announced the recipients of its inaugural Philanthropy Awards during a Nov. 13 event at the N.C. Museum of History in Raleigh. The awards recognize individuals and organizations for outstanding contributions to the preservation, study or understanding of North Carolina history. Julia Jones Daniels and Frank A. Daniels Jr. of Raleigh received individual philanthropy awards, and the State Employees' Credit Union Foundation accepted the corporate philanthropy award.

The Durham Rescue Mission held its annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner and Warm Clothing Give-away on Nov. 22. With the help of 388 of volunteers, it served a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal to hundreds of hungry and homeless men, women, and children. About 5,000 clothing items and 299 bags of groceries were provided. Volunteers delivered 183 Meals on Wheels to Triangle residents who are homebound.

The North Carolina Press Association recently admitted the nonprofit, online news service Carolina Public Press into its membership, making it the first online nonprofit news service in Western North Carolina to gain the distinction.

News about opportunities, initiatives

The 2012 Triangle Family Services' annual Gingerbread Benefit celebrates 10 years of fundraising with elaborate gingerbread houses donated to the Raleigh-based nonprofit by local celebrity chefs. The Gingerbread Benefit will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Umstead Hotel and Spa in Cary. All proceeds will support Triangle Family Services. For information, visit www.tfsnc.org.

Duke Children's Hospital & Health Center invites children to submit artwork for the 2013 Duke Children's Holiday and All-Occasion Card Program. Submitted pieces will be entered into the annual contest and the winning artwork will turned into greeting cards to raise funds to benefit Duke Children's.
