Nineteen students from across the state were honored for making a difference in their communities at the 20th annual North Carolina Campus Compact Student Conference on Nov. 2 at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte.

NC State senior and political science major Ellen Furby received the 2013 Community Impact Student Award for her work as executive director of Feed the Pack, a campus-based food pantry for university faculty, students and staff.

"It was an honor just to be at the conference around all of those students and people who are doing great things," says Furby.

North Carolina Campus Compact is an               Ellen Furby (NC State News Service) association of about 40 colleges and universities around the state that is dedicated to "campus-community" engagement.

As the first executive director of Feed the Pack, Furby and her team of board members, partners and volunteers have been devoted to combating food insecurity on the university's campus. Furby has helped establish campus and community partnerships which have allowed the pantry to collect more than 6,000 pounds of food and distribute 3,000 pounds.

"I am the most proud of the amount of food we've given out and the amount of people we've served," says Furby. "It is truly a community initiative, and it is truly inspiring."

The Feed the Pack pantry, which is staffed by 100 volunteers, opened in November 2012 and recently celebrated its first anniversary as a functioning pantry. Due to the success of Feed the Pack, college and university campuses across the country have reached out to Furby for advice on establishing similar pantries.
