GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three North Carolina nonprofits were honored at a statewide conference of nonprofits in recognition of their commitment to excellence.

The Davidson Housing Coalition, Disability Rights North Carolina and Partnership for Children of Cumberland County each received the Nonprofit Sector Stewardship Award, presented by the N.C. Center for Nonprofits at its 2011 Conference and Public Policy Forum, held in Greensboro Sept. 22 and 23.

The Davidson Housing Coalition was honored for its efforts to work with other Mecklenburg County organizations to address not only affordable housing but financial stability for all residents.

"The Coalition is inspiring the whole community to see that many more of Davidson's townspeople can become financially self-sufficient, not just have a roof over their heads," Jane Kendall, president of the N.C. Center for Nonprofits, says in a statement.

Disability Rights North Carolina, which is based in Raleigh, received the award in recognition of the wide range of advocacy efforts it employs in order to improve the lives of North Carolinians with disabilities.

"One change in the law can change the lives of millions of people," says Kendall. "Nonprofits' deep, first-hand experience in their communities gives them a powerful advantage when they advocate for changes in public policies that affect people's lives."

And Partnership for Children of Cumberland County was lauded for its success in combining a passion for its mission with accountability and strong management practices, which include the diversification of its funding sources in the face of looming state budget cuts.

"PFC is a model for how nonprofits can adapt and thrive in these challenging times," Loleta Wood Foster, a member of the N.C. Center for Nonprofits' board, says in a statement. "It combines the administration, facilities and evaluation for many organizations so all of them can make more of a difference."

Each of the awards comes with an original work of art by Durham artist Galia Goodman and $500 to be spent on professional development for board members and staff.
