RALEIGH, N.C. - The Boys & Girls Clubs of Wake County exceeded the $1.2 million goal for its annual fundraising campaign by nearly $44,000.

The effort raised roughly $120,000 online, up from $50,000 in last year's campaign, including $70,000 generated through a promotion at Blue Water Spa.

It also received a $75,000 gift from the Stewards Fund and $40,000 from the Continuous Blessings Foundation, which now has given a total of $130,000 over three years as part of a commitment to give $250,000 to name the gymnasium for the late Chris Bunn at the new Zebulon Boys & Girls Club that is scheduled to open Jan. 1. 2012.

Co-chaired by Mark Lee, president of Baker Roofing, and Kevin Carlin, Southeast area sales director for Millennium Pharmaceuticals, the campaign was led by Gordon Brown, chairman of the Boys & Girls Clubs' board of directors and chief financial officer at Alfred Williams & Co.

Key to the campaign were over 300 volunteers, roughly two-thirds of whom created personal fundraising pages at the Boys & Girls Clubs' website that they used to send personalized email appeals to friends and family.

The Boys & Girls Clubs serve nearly 4,100 at-risk youth ages six to 18 at seven locations in Wake County, and operate a summer day camp in Nash County.

A $1,000 contribution to the campaign covers the cost of buses for 50 field trips, and a contribution of $400 covers the cost of computer software that serves over 500 members.

Valeska Redmond, director of development and marketing for the Boys & Girls Clubs for the past 5½ years, is leaving to teach business communications to graduate students in the masters-of-management-studies program at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University.
