Aug. 18: Food insecurity, Combined campaign, Wesley Mancini, and more

Winston-Salem metropolitan statistical area (MSA) ranked worst in U.S. for food insecurity in households with children in 2010, according to new study from Food Research & Action Center; Greensboro/High Point MSA ranked 17th.
Moses Carey Jr., secretary, N.C. Department of Administration, named chair, 2011 State Employees Combined Campaign; Dee Freeman, secretary, N.C. Department of Environment and Natural Resources, named vice-chair and chair of 2012 campaign, which raised over $82 million in 2010 and over $82 million since established in 1984.
Wesley Mancini Foundation, Charlotte, changed grant application requirements and now will pick annual theme the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgendered community has current need to address, and consider only grant applications addressing that theme.
Beginning in 2011-12 school year, roughly 15 Teach for America teachers will be hired by Durham Public Schools to teach at Neal Middle School.
Conservation Trust for North Carolina acquired 12.7-acre tract near Cumberland Knob in Alleghany County.
