CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Seven Charlotte-area high-school seniors are receiving help with college expenses from the local alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority.
The Charlotte chapter, which numbers more than 400 members, was founded in 1942 and since then has awarded a total of more than $500,000 in scholarships and grants in the community.
This year, a total of $10,500 was distributed as part of the Shadd Scoggins scholarship awards, named after Dorothy Counts Scoggins, the first African-American student at Harding High School, and Virginia Shadd, the first female principal at Myers Park High School.
All scholarship winners this year ranked in the top quarter of their graduation classes:
- Tesema Barkot, East Mecklenburg High, received $2,500
- Jacquia Randson, West Charlotte, received $2,000
- Brigitte Lohadie, Olympic High, received $2,000
- Emily Dillard, Ardrey Kell High, $1,500
- Stephanie Howard, Vance High, received $1,000
- Ashli Cumberbatch, North Mecklenburg High, received $750
- Jasmine Brooks, Olympic High, received $750
The scholarships were presented as part of the sorority's May Week festivities, which encourage local middle-school students to excel academically in preparation for high school.
