North Carolina is home to 25,000 charitable nonprofit organizations, excluding most churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and other places of worship.
These nonprofits serve communities across the state by providing education, human services, health care, arts and culture, social justice, research and more.
Women represent the vast majority of volunteers and staff members operating these nonprofits. Research shows that women traditionally give their time, talent and treasure to nonprofits that support women and children.
This is not surprising since women, as society's primary caregivers and nurturers, assume responsibility for these populations. Women also rely upon and receive services from these nonprofits.
The N.C. Center for Nonprofits, founded in 1990, serves as a statewide network for nonprofit board and staff members, an information center on effective organizational practices, and an advocate for the nonprofit sector as a whole.
The N.C. Center lists its nonprofit member organizations on its website by county and by field. Following is a list of members that serve women and children in selected counties across the state.
