Raleigh circle holding ‘shower’ for shelter

RALEIGH, N.C. - A Raleigh giving circle is holding a "shower" to furnish and decorate the room it funded at a local women's shelter.

The Brier Creek Circle of Giving donated $3,000 to pay for a bedroom at the new shelter under construction at Interact, a sexual-abuse and domestic-violence prevention agency in Raleigh.

And in June, the circle will spearhead a shower to celebrate the "birth" of the new facility and outfit the bedroom.

Through a registry set up by Interact at Target, shower guests can choose from a list of linens, lamps and decorations to help the bedroom feel like home for the women that will be staying there.

The shower is one of several being held on behalf of Interact to help the nonprofit fund the final touches on its new shelter.

Not only will the shower benefit the women and children who take refuge at the shelter, it provides a fun and easy path for giving.

"We find that people want to be philanthropic," says circle member and shower co-host Leslie Starsoneck. "They just don't know how.  So what happens is they end up not doing anything, or not feeling good about what they do."

The shower, which is co-ed, will feature snacks and literature about Interact, and will be decorated to herald the birth of the new shelter.

The Brier Creek Giving Circle, based in Raleigh, has a core membership of 21 people, each of whom commits to donating a minimum $800 a year, as well as 11 "silent partners" who donate at least $200 each annually.
