Five years after she became president and CEO of BoardSource, a national 501(c)(3) that provides consulting and training on nonprofit board governance, Linda C. Crompton has announced her resignation, effective Jan. 15.

Anne Wallestad, BoardSource's chief operating officer and a key architect of the organization's current strategic plan, will serve as interim CEO, says Phillip Henderson, vice president of BoardSource's board of directors and president of Surdna Foundation. There is no timeline for naming a permanent CEO.

"A leadership transition allows you to take a deep look at where you are and what you want to do," says Henderson, adding that Crompton signaled her intentions to the board last year. "We're really going to miss her and the terrific leadership, but the great thing is we have Anne to move us forward."

According to GuideStar, BoardSource - also known as the National Center for Nonprofit Boards - had revenue of $6.1 million and expenses of $7.4 million in FY2011. The agency earned the GuideStar Seal for its commitment to transparency.

North Carolina's Smart Start program is among its former clients. Its current roster includes influential organizations in such nonprofit sectors as education, youth, health and human services, community and faith, arts and advocacy.

Charles Pierson, president and CEO of Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, says BoardSource has been "extremely important to Big Brothers Big Sisters over the years, both nationally and locally. The organization has helped us develop our board governance model and has provided training to our leadership. We've used their consulting and training services and have been very pleased."

Henderson says Crompton will continue to work in the nonprofit governance sector as a private consultant on the West Coast. Her celebrated 30-year career in nonprofit and for-profit governance including service as Canada's first female bank president and as leader of the Investor Responsibility Research Center, a global provider of investor and social issues research that was involved in the anti-apartheid campaign in South Africa.

Henderson credits Crompton's tenure with a major membership drive in the last 12-18 months, which has resulted in an increase of about 35,000 members. Additionally, BoardSource launched its Certificate of Nonprofit Board Education webinar series, which covers fundamental nonprofit governance concepts in an effort to help new and potential board members better understand their role in an effective board.
