We believe that when you are successful, whether as an individual or corporation, you have the responsibility to leverage that success to positively impact your community. North Carolina has been home to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for more than 75 years. This state has been good to us, and we are committed to giving back. We give back by being a good business partner. We give back by being a good corporate citizen. We give back through our community partnerships, our employee volunteer efforts and through supporting the efforts of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Foundation. All in all, we are committed to helping make our home state a better, healthier place to live for the millions who live here and for the one in three North Carolinians that we proudly serve.

Brad Wilson
President and Chief Executive Officer
In November of 2000, BCBSNC established the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) Foundation, a separate, independent, charitable foundation with the mission of improving the health and well-being of North Carolinians. Since its founding, the Foundation has invested more than $46 million through nearly 300 grants to organizations across the state. BCBSNC Foundation focuses grantmaking on programs and services designed to improve the health outcomes of individuals served by safety-net organizations, increase physical activity and healthy eating for North Carolinians, and increase the effectiveness of and strengthen North Carolina-based nonprofit organizations.
Specifically, BCBSNC Foundation focus areas include:
In addition to grantmaking, the BCBSNC Foundation supports several signature programs designed to promote increased physical activity, proper nutrition and breast health awareness. Also, the BCBSNC Foundation helps lead the development of nonprofit organizations and nonprofit leaders across the state, through the Healthy Community Institute for Nonprofit Excellence, a free, two-day capacity building training program.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina (BCBSNC) is proud of its long tradition of helping to improve the health and well-being of North Carolinians through actively engaging in innovative solutions to address community health needs.
Over the last 10 years, our employees have logged more than 263,000 community volunteer hours through our employee volunteer program, equating to nearly $4.5 million in donated time. In 2008, BCBSNC and its employees contributed more than $1 Million to the United Way and in excess of 20,000 pounds of food to the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina. Employees also put down their Blackberries and laptops and picked up saws and hammers for Habitat for Humanity in Durham's Hope Crossing neighborhood, a green community located minutes from our headquarters building. In addition, 80 percent of our corporate officers participate in community outreach programs.
Through our financial commitment, community involvement initiatives and employee volunteer programs, we are proud to continually support efforts to build and keep North Carolina communities healthy.
