Julia completed her master's degree in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a recipient of the Roy H. Park Fellowship. She received her B.A. in international relations and foreign language (Russian) from the University of South Alabama in her hometown of Mobile.

She has interned with the Voice of America Russian service in Washington, D.C., as well as The Moscow Times in Moscow, Russia. Previously, she worked as an administrative associate for a transportation consulting company in Mobile.
