Ret graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a bachelor's degree in history, and earned a master's degree in business administration at the Kenan-Flagler Business School at UNC-Chapel Hill.

A former reporter and columnist for Fortune magazine, Ret was a director for KnowledgeBase Marketing in Chapel Hill, N.C., managing the company's electric utility practice, and a director in Chapel Hill for Young & Rubicam, leading a team of database and loyalty-marketing professionals designing customer-management solutions for corporate clients.

She also was communications director for the Citizens For Jim Hunt Gubernatorial Campaign in 1992, and served as deputy policy director for the Office of the Governor in North Carolina from 1992 to 1994. Ret served as board chair for PlannedParentood of the Capital and Coast and currently sits on the board of Wee Care Children's Enrichment Program.
