Todd is a veteran news reporter and editor who created the Philanthropy Journal in 2000 for the A.J. Fletcher Foundation in Raleigh, N.C.
A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the New England School of Law in Boston, Todd worked for weekly and daily newspapers in Massachusetts and North Carolina before joining The News & Observer in Raleigh, N.C., in 1981.
At The N&O, he reported on government, politics, education and regulated industries, and served as business editor.
In 1991, as business editor, he started writing a weekly philanthropy column, and two years later created the Philanthropy Journal of North Carolina, a publication of The News and Observer Foundation that was the first statewide newspaper in the U.S. to report on the charitable world.
In 1999, he joined the A.J. Fletcher Foundation to develop the online Philanthropy Journal.
Todd, who was editor of The Daily Tar Heel, the student newspaper at UNC-Chapel Hill, has taught nonprofit reporting and media relations there and at Duke University in Durham, N.C., and regularly speaks at workshops, seminars, meetings and conferences on the topics of nonprofit media relations and trends in the charitable world.
